Our Merino sheep are a commercial flock and have been run here on this farm for over 50 years. There have been a lot of changes from their early beginnings and the last 20 years has seen a greater focus on fleece handle and length.
We ceased mulsing in 2013 and have been working on breeding to reduce breech wrinkle and use alternative fly control.
The young sheep have an average fibre diameter of around 17 micron and the adult sheep average 18-19 micron. The average staple length on the adult fleeces is over 10cm and the flock “comfort factor” measurement is over 99%.
The wool going into our combed tops is professionally classed at shearing time and consists only of our prime fleeces. This results in a superior length and handle in the tops as well as very little processing waste.
